Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions worldwide. It occurs when the cartilage cushioning the ends of bones wears down over time. New research shows it may be prevented—or even reversed—with weight loss.

It’s estimated that walking generates forces three to six times one’s body weight across the knee. For someone just 10 lbs overweight, that’s an extra 30–60 lbs of pressure on the joint with each step.

One study found that obese women had four times the risk of knee osteoarthritis compared to non-obese women. For men, the risk was nearly five times higher. This isn’t just about mechanical strain—there’s more to the story.

Overweight individuals also show increased rates of hand osteoarthritis, suggesting that inflammation plays a role. Fat cells can release pro-inflammatory chemicals that contribute to joint pain across the entire body—not just in weight-bearing joints. As a result, people with higher body weight experience more joint pain.

But there’s hope.

Studies show that weight loss reduces the risk and symptoms of osteoarthritis. In one study, overweight women who lost just 11 lbs reduced their risk of knee osteoarthritis by more than 50%. Participants also reported less pain overall.

You don’t have to live with chronic joint pain. A safe and effective weight loss program can halt progression—or even eliminate symptoms altogether.
